President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his desire to keep popular social media app TikTok around “for a little while”, according to Reuters. This statement comes as the US TikTok ban is set to take effect in less than a month, with a deadline of January 19th next year.
During an event in Phoenix, Arizona, Trump reportedly told supporters that he had initially considered the possibility of banning TikTok, but changed his mind after seeing the app’s massive engagement on his own content. “We did go on TikTok, and we had a great response with billions of views,” he said. “They brought me a chart, and it was a record, and it was so beautiful to see, and as I looked at it, I said, ‘Maybe we gotta keep this sucker around for a little while.'”
The President-elect also stated that he has a “warm spot” in his heart for the app after meeting with TikTok’s CEO earlier this week. This development comes as a surprise, given Trump’s previous statements on the matter. In April, President Joe Biden signed a bill requiring ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, to sell the app by the aforementioned deadline or risk having it banned.
ByteDance is currently fighting the bill in court and has been granted a Supreme Court hearing for January 10th.
