In-Game Creators Earn Big: Overwolf Pays Out $240 Million In 2024
Overwolf, a platform for user-generated content (UGC) in gaming, has revealed that it paid out a staggering $240 million to its community of in-game creators in 2024. This significant payout marks a 19% increase from the $201 million handed over by the company in 2023.
The substantial revenue shared among creators can be attributed to the growing popularity and acceptance of UGC in gaming, with major titles such as Valorant, League of Legends, Fortnite, Dota 2, World of Warcraft, Rainbow Six Siege, and Minecraft supported by Overwolf. The platform’s success is also a result of its ability to support over 1,500 games and 178,000 creatives.
Overwolf’s achievements can be seen in the form of successful collaborations between game developers and UGC creators. For instance, the ARK: Survival Ascended mod, developed by UGC game studio and publisher Look North World, grossed an impressive $350,000 upon its release in June 2024. The popularity of this mod further solidifies Overwolf’s position as a key player in the gaming industry.
The company’s CEO, Uri Marchand, expressed pride in its ability to pay out such large sums to creators, stating that “Our single north star is creator payouts–how much we’ve helped creators earn. We’re proud to have paid over $240 million to creators in 2024 alone.” Overwolf looks forward to continuing this trend into the future.
The growth of UGC and its financial potential are undeniable, with premium mods becoming a significant revenue stream for creators. These high-end mods can sell for anywhere between $2 and $10, and mod authors take home at least 50% of the revenue generated. Additionally, in-app ads provide an alternative source of income, offering creators a 70% share of ad revenue.
The future of UGC looks promising, with Overwolf connecting creators to specialist gaming groups through its platform CurseForge, which offers over 500,000 game mods from more than 134,000 authors. This will allow for the development and sharing of custom content within popular titles like ARK: Survival Ascended and other supported games.
As UGC continues to evolve, it’s evident that creators are at the forefront of this revolution. With platforms like Overwolf leading the charge in providing fair compensation, the possibilities for gamers and developers alike are limitless.
