In-Game Creators Earn Big: Overwolf Pays Out $240 Million In 2024
Overwolf, a platform for user-generated content (UGC) in gaming, has revealed that it paid out a staggering $240 million to in-game creators in 2024. This impressive payout marks a 19% increase from the $201 million paid out in 2023.
The company credits its success to its creators, including mod developers, in-game app designers, and website private server operators for popular titles such as Valorant, League of Legends, Fortnite, Dota 2, World of Warcraft, Rainbow Six Siege, and Minecraft. Overwolf’s CEO Uri Marchand emphasized the importance of creator payouts, stating that it is their “single north star” and expressing pride in paying out over $240 million to creators in 2024.
Overwolf has experienced significant growth, supporting 1,500 games and engaging with 178,000 creatives. This growth has been fueled by the success of its mods, which have seen a major increase in popularity.
The company has also seen success through its acquisition of ad tech company NitroPay for an eight-figure sum in May, which doubled its audience to over 100 million unique monthly players.
Notably, Overwolf’s community has created a vast array of premium mods that are priced between $2 and $10. These mods have been incredibly successful, with 46 of them generating over $3 million in revenue each. Mod authors take home at least 50% of the revenue generated by their work, providing a significant source of income for many.
Additionally, Overwolf’s in-app ads offer creators an opportunity to earn money through ad revenue sharing. The platform retains 30% of the revenue generated, while creators receive 70%, ensuring that they can continue to focus on creating high-quality content without worrying about financial constraints.
Through its partnership with CurseForge, which offers over 500,000 game mods from 134,000 authors, Overwolf is connecting with specialist gaming groups. This has led to some remarkable successes, including the ARK: Survival Ascended mod, which introduced custom dinosaurs and has seen significant sales.
The future of in-game creation looks bright for Overwolf’s creators, with the CEO expressing excitement about the potential opportunities that will arise as major studios and IPs begin embracing UGC in 2025.
