A new warning has been issued to all 2.5 billion Gmail users as AI attacks are expected to increase in the coming days. Google Support recently contacted a user claiming that there was suspicious activity on their account, and it’s a good thing they did because the caller was trying to trick them into revealing sensitive information.
The user, Mitrovic, is a security consultant who was quick to notice that something didn’t seem right about the call. The number the call was coming from appeared to be a legitimate Google number, but upon further inspection, it was an obfuscated address that wasn’t actually associated with Google.
Mitrovic recognized that if he had fallen for the scam, the attacker would have likely continued with the recovery process, capturing login credentials and potentially even session cookies to bypass 2FA. This is a critical warning for all Gmail users, as these types of attacks are becoming increasingly common.
To mitigate these AI-driven threats, Google recommends taking several precautions:
1. Avoid clicking on links, downloading attachments, or entering personal information when receiving an unexpected request.
2. If you receive a suspicious email or message from Google, do not respond to it. Instead, go directly to myaccount.google.com/notifications to check your account’s recent security activity.
3. Be wary of urgent-sounding messages that appear to be from people you trust, such as friends or family members.
4. When prompted to enter a password for your Gmail account or another service, do not comply. Instead, go directly to the website and log in normally.
It is crucial to remember that AI attacks are becoming more sophisticated, and it’s essential to stay vigilant when using online services like Gmail.
