According to the latest data from Google Trends, Americans have spoken, and it seems there’s a cookie preference divide across the country. The search giant has released its list of most uniquely searched for Christmas cookies, revealing some intriguing regional preferences.
In this festive season, people are looking beyond the classic sugar cookie, with various regions displaying distinct sweet tooth inclinations. Interestingly, the data suggests that while there may be general preferences for certain types of cookies, individual states have carved out their own niches when it comes to holiday baking.
Gingerbread proved to be a popular choice on both coasts, claiming top spot in Maine, New Hampshire, and Oregon. In contrast, Floridians opted for oatmeal raisin, which may surprise some, given the region’s warm climate. It is worth noting that these findings are based on aggregated search data from across the country.
On the other side of the nation, residents in California, Tennessee, and Louisiana chose Buche de Noel, or yule log, over other options. Meanwhile, Alaskans, Vermonters, and Idahoans sought out sugar cookies more frequently than others.
The most striking trend observed was the widespread popularity of anise-flavored Italian Christmas cookies, which took top spot in seven states, including Wyoming, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Iowa, and Wisconsin. It is interesting to note that while this cookie variety did not find its way into the preferences of New York residents, their search data showed a bias towards Greek Christmas cookies.
The data also highlights the demand for shortcuts in cookie preparation, as Coloradans searched more frequently for “cake mix Christmas cookie” than any other option. The recipe typically requires only three ingredients: cake mix, oil and eggs, making it an appealing choice for those seeking to simplify their holiday baking routines.
Interestingly, the map released by Google Trends also revealed distinct preferences when it comes to pie choices.
