Guilty! Crypto and the Law in 2024
As we close out 2024, it’s clear that there have been some significant developments in the legal arena of cryptocurrency. This year has seen the culmination of events from previous years, with notable figures facing consequences for their actions.
One such individual is Craig Wright, who was found not to be Satoshi Nakamoto and was also referred to the Crown Prosecution Service for possible perjury charges. The Australian businessman had been attempting to disprove his claim as the creator of Bitcoin, but ultimately failed in his efforts.
Wright’s case took a dramatic turn when he breached an injunction won by the Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA) and was subsequently sentenced to a year in prison, suspended for two years. The threat of perjury charges still looms over him, which could result in him being officially a convict on the run.
Another notable case involved Tigran Gambaryan, who found himself at the center of an unprecedented legal episode. Gambaryan, a Californian resident, was arrested and charged with making $22 million in NFT rug pulls.
