Starbucks Strike to Expand to More Than 300 Stores, Union Says
A walkout at Starbucks is set to expand to over 300 U.S. stores on Tuesday, with approximately 5,000 workers expected to participate in the five-day labor action that will conclude later this day, according to the employees’ union.
The strike began on Friday and has since broadened to include more locations in various cities across the country over the weekend, with workers protesting a lack of progress in contract negotiations with the Seattle-based company. The union claims that Starbucks has failed to uphold its commitment made in February to reach a labor agreement this year.
In a statement, the union said that Starbucks proposed an economic package offering no new wage increases for unionized baristas and a 1.5% increase in future years. In contrast, the company maintains that its pay and benefits are already worth $30 per hour for those working at least 20 hours a week.
The union also emphasized the need for Starbucks to resolve outstanding legal issues, including hundreds of unfair labor practice charges filed with the National Labor Relations Board.
