Onyx Motorbikes is Back, One Year After Its Owner Died Leaving the Company in Shambles
A year has passed since James Khatiblou, the original founder of Onyx Motorbikes, tragically passed away, putting the entire company on life support. However, a surprise announcement on Monday from Tim Seward, who was also part of the founding team, has resurrected the brand, and it’s finally back to life.
Seward revealed in a LinkedIn post that he has managed to revive the brand with some significant backing. While we don’t have any information about the investors involved, we do know that the company is starting small by selling only 100 units of its RCR electric dirtbike. It remains unclear whether these bikes are new production or leftover stock from earlier this year.
The sudden departure of Khatiblou left Onyx Motorbikes in a state of disarray, with unpaid debts and unfinished orders leaving customers in limbo. The company’s Chinese supplier had been holding onto the e-bike inventory since then.
As for what lies ahead for the revamped brand, TechCrunch has reached out to Seward, but he hasn’t yet provided any insights into his future plans. It remains to be seen whether the company will be able to recoup from its past financial troubles and regain the trust of its customers.
For now, all we can say is that Onyx Motorbikes is back in business, and it’s going to take some time before we see a more comprehensive plan unfold.
