The 2022 Christmas special of Doctor Who, “Joy to the World”, is a mixed bag. While it attempts to serve multiple masters by balancing its own narrative with the larger context of the show’s storyline, the pacing and coherence suffer as a result.
In this review, I’ll attempt to break down what works and what doesn’t in this episode.
The highlight of the special has got to be the extended sequence where the Doctor befriends Anita at the time hotel. This is a fantastic idea that lets us see the Doctor in a different light – not just as a hero or a loner, but as someone who genuinely connects with others.
