Even Apple Wasn’t Able to Make VR Headsets Mainstream in 2024
In 2024, it’s become clear that virtual reality (VR) headsets are not going to be the revolution we thought they would be. I recently wrote about Meta’s failed attempts at making VR a mainstream phenomenon with their Quest Pro headset, which was met with a lukewarm reception and was eventually discontinued just two years after its launch.
The fact is, most people don’t want to wear bulky headsets that make them look like they’re in a sci-fi movie. They also don’t want to sacrifice space in their homes for VR gaming stations or offices. Even the tech giant Apple, known for its innovative approach to product design, has reportedly launched an internal study on the market for computer glasses – not VR headsets.
Apple’s focus on augmented reality (AR) glasses rather than VR headsets makes sense. Not only are AR glasses more practical and aesthetically pleasing, but they also have a broader appeal across various use cases, such as taking photos or listening to podcasts without having to hold up a phone. This shift in the market has left Meta struggling to find new ways to push their VR technology forward.
In my experience, I can attest that even when VR headsets are used for gaming or entertainment purposes, they still feel like solo activities – something you do by yourself, not with others. That lack of social interaction is a major barrier to widespread adoption.
