A recent report from Lookout has shed new light on the mobile threat landscape, revealing some astonishing statistics. The analysis, which covered 220 million devices and 360 million apps, as well as billions of web items, found that iOS devices are more vulnerable to phishing attacks than their Android counterparts.
According to the findings, a staggering 18.4% of all iOS devices were targeted by phishers in Q3 of this year alone, whereas only 11.4% of Android devices fell prey to these malicious attempts. This stark contrast in numbers is attributed to the sheer popularity of iOS devices among enterprise users and attackers alike.
While some may argue that this increased exposure can be countered by sheer mathematics – more devices being used means a higher risk of attacks – Lookout’s findings suggest that there’s more to it than just simple math. It appears that 19% of all enterprise iOS devices were exposed to phishing attacks in the first three quarters of 2024, whereas only 10.9% of Android devices fell victim to such attacks during this same period.
The report highlights an alarming trend in mobile threats, as cybercriminals are increasingly targeting smartphones and tablets with advanced tactics like AI-powered impersonation attacks. As David Richardson, Vice President of Endpoint at Lookout puts it, “As cyber threats evolve, we’re seeing more and more attacks targeting mobile devices as the gateway to corporate cloud apps that house sensitive data.”
While some may be quick to dismiss these findings as an Android-only concern, this report serves as a stark reminder that phishing attacks are a ubiquitous threat that affects all users – regardless of their device type. As such, it’s crucial for both iOS and Android users to stay vigilant and educate themselves on the evolving nature of these threats.
In conclusion, the data paints a concerning picture where neither iOS nor Android devices can rest easy regarding mobile security.
