As organizations continue to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, a significant concern has emerged in the form of shadow AI. This unauthorized use of AI tools and technologies within an organization can have devastating consequences, including data privacy breaches, intellectual property risks, and compliance challenges.
The statistics are alarming. Nearly two-thirds of business organizations regularly use generative AI today, according to a 2024 McKinsey Global Survey. The adoption rate has more than doubled since 2023, with government agencies following suit. It’s essential for companies to implement robust oversight mechanisms to monitor and regulate the use of AI technologies.
One approach is to establish an AI council, which can ensure that AI is deployed responsibly, aligning with the organization’s strategic goals while safeguarding against potential threats. By fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, organizations can harness the transformative power of AI while minimizing risks.
Another critical component in mitigating these risks is attack surface management (ASM). This technology provides comprehensive visibility and control over an organization’s digital ecosystem, detecting unauthorized access, shadow IT, and compliance issues. As AI technologies are integrated into business operations, they can inadvertently expand the attack surface by introducing new vulnerabilities and entry points for cyber threats.
Without ASM, companies risk compromising data integrity and confidentiality, increasing the likelihood of data breaches. Instead, organizations should leverage ASM to continuously monitor and analyze their IT infrastructure, including SaaS applications, to detect potential security gaps. This proactive approach will help ensure that AI implementations don’t compromise sensitive information.
