
The holiday gift return rush has started, and it’s crucial to be informed before sending back any unwanted presents.
Starting Friday, the National Retail Federation predicts that nearly $900 billion in goods will be returned. According to the NRF, approximately 17% of sales are expected to be sent back this year, with a peak in returns between now and January 2nd. In light of this trend, it is essential to understand the return policies before returning any gifts.
At the FedEx shipping hub in Anchorage, Alaska, they sort up to 80,000 packages per day during their holiday rush. FedEx senior ramp manager Tracy Watkins emphasized that the company’s holiday rush begins on Thanksgiving and lasts for three weeks after Christmas. Each of their cargo planes can carry over 20,000 packages, which may travel to FedEx hubs in Oakland, Indianapolis, or Memphis, as well as Asia and the Pacific.
Before sending back unwanted gifts, experts recommend doing your research, as return policies vary across retailers. Nerdwallet’s Kimberly Palmer warns that some stores might even charge for shipping returns. “Keep those items in their original packaging,” Palmer said. “You should have receipts and not wait until it is too late. Many people miss the deadline for returns to be processed.”
