Trump Asks Supreme Court to Let Him Rescue TikTok
President-elect Donald Trump has filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court, asking the justices to allow him to negotiate a deal to save TikTok from a looming US ban.
In the filing, Trump argues that he “alone possesses the consummate dealmaking expertise, the electoral mandate, and the political will to negotiate a resolution to save the platform.” The President-elect claims that his unique ability to bring people together would enable him to secure a deal ensuring TikTok’s national security concerns are addressed while also protecting its users’ rights.
The request comes as Trump has recently shifted his stance on TikTok, having initially pushed for a ban during his first term in office. However, after his campaign successfully utilized the platform during the 2024 election, he seems to have changed his tune.
Trump’s filing asks that the January 19th deadline for determining whether the TikTok ban can proceed be stayed, citing the need for more time to negotiate a deal that would obviate the need for the Court to decide on the First Amendment implications of the ban. The deadline is set to expire just one day before Trump assumes office.
It remains to be seen how the Supreme Court will respond to Trump’s request and whether it will grant him permission to intervene in the ongoing case. However, this development adds another layer of complexity to an already contentious issue that has garnered significant attention from civil society groups and the tech industry alike.
