Former President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to delay the impending ban on TikTok in the United States.
Trump, who was instrumental in orchestrating a ban on TikTok’s parent company ByteDance in his final days in office, is now seeking to intervene and block the proposed ban. The move comes after Biden administration officials announced plans to restrict access to the popular social media platform due to national security concerns.
According to court documents filed by Trump’s legal team, the former president argues that a stay on the ban is necessary to protect his “reputation” and “interests” in the matter. A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately return requests for further comment.
The Biden administration has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to protecting American interests and national security online. Last year, officials announced plans to restrict access to TikTok and other Chinese-owned social media platforms citing concerns about data collection and surveillance by foreign governments.
Despite these efforts, ByteDance has refused to sell or spin off the app, arguing that it is a key driver of innovation and creativity in the digital space. The company has also faced criticism for failing to adequately address concerns around data privacy and security.
In his filing, Trump’s legal team claims that the proposed ban is “arbitrary and capricious” and that a stay would be necessary to protect his own interests in the matter.
The move comes as TikTok faces increased scrutiny over its handling of user data and potential security risks.
