“Squid Game” Season 2 Review: The Games Work, Everything Else Doesn’t
The latest season of the popular Netflix series “Squid Game” has finally arrived, and while it attempts to revive the magic of the first installment, it falls flat in many areas. The main issue lies not with the games themselves, but rather the surrounding plotlines that fail to deliver.
One notable addition is In-ho, who is revealed to be the Front Man himself. However, his actions remain unclear throughout the season, leaving viewers wondering about his motives and purpose. Similarly, the introduction of new mechanics such as players voting to leave the games adds a fresh layer to the series, resulting in some dramatic moments.
On the other hand, everything outside of the games feels like a waste of time. The storyline involving Jun-ho and the mercenary team is aimless and only becomes interesting at the very last minute. The subplot featuring No-eul, a North Korean defector behind one of the guard masks, starts strong but ultimately fizzles out with no resolution.
The problem lies in having multiple plotlines that fail to pay off, resulting in an overstuffed season that feels disjointed. While it’s good that the main storyline remains solid, these unnecessary additions bring down the overall quality of the show.
Despite this, I’m still curious to see how the series concludes, and I wouldn’t call Season 2 a disastrous follow-up. However, the initial magic has indeed faded, leaving viewers with mixed feelings about the direction of the show.
