Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen Quits Championship Tournament Over Pair of Jeans: ‘I’m Out, F— You’
Renowned chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen has abruptly quit the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship in New York City after being asked to change his outfit due to violating the tournament’s dress code. The Norwegian player, who was scheduled to continue competing on Saturday, made the sudden decision following a heated exchange with organizers.
According to reports, Carlsen was informed that he would not be paired if he didn’t comply with the dress code by changing out of his jeans and into more formal attire. In response, the 31-year-old chess legend declared, “At that point, it became a bit of a matter of principle for me” before announcing his withdrawal from the tournament.
“I’ll probably head off to somewhere where the weather is a bit nicer than here,” Carlsen added in an interview after the incident.
