Scammers Share Wallet Seed Phrases to Bait Victims
Scammers have devised a new trick to swindle unsuspecting cryptocurrency users out of their funds. The scammers are now sharing their wallets’ seed phrases in the comment sections of YouTube videos, disguising themselves as novice crypto users seeking help with transferring digital assets.
The malicious actors create new YouTube accounts and post the seed phrases in comments asking for assistance with moving cryptocurrencies from one wallet to another. This tactic preys on victims’ eagerness for easy money, making it difficult for them to resist the temptation.
According to Kaspersky researcher Mikhail Sytnik, the scammers’ wallets actually contain thousands of dollars worth of Tron-based USDT to further entice a victim to transfer part or all of the amount to another wallet. However, the provided seed phrase belongs to a multi-signature wallet, making it impossible for the victims to withdraw their funds.
The scammers make a profit when the victims attempt to send TRX from a wallet they own to pay a “small fee” for transaction costs. The “small fee” ultimately ends up in a completely different, third-party wallet.
Sytnik emphasizes that the only way to avoid falling prey to this scam is to be a “decent person” and not fall victim to such schemes. He stresses that crypto users must stay informed about the latest scams, utilize reliable security measures for their wallets, and refrain from interacting with information provided by strangers.
This latest trick is just one of many ways scammers are exploiting unsuspecting cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Just two weeks ago, blockchain security firm Scam Sniffer exposed a scam where fraudsters use fake Telegram verification bots to access crypto wallets.
With scammers continuously seeking new ways to entice victims, it can be expected that they will continue to target and deceive vulnerable crypto users.
