The ‘What If…?’ Series Finale Ends Confusingly, At Best
What If…? started off as one of Marvel’s most interesting and highly praised projects. An introduction to a multiverse with new and modified heroes and villains was something that fans were eagerly anticipating. Despite being an anthology series, it did have some throughlines, mainly led by Peggy Atwell’s Captain Carter. However, the end result leaves many open questions about what exactly happened and where this concept is supposed to go from here.
The series concluded with the creation of The Exiles, a group that does not resemble its comic book counterpart in any way. This includes Captain Carter, a Mjolnir-wielding Storm, and original characters Kahhori and Birdie. It’s unclear whether some or all of The Exiles are intended to spin off into a new animated series or if they were simply brought together as a way to end the show.
One of the most talked-about aspects of season 3 was an episode where Howard the Duck and Darcy from the Thor movies had a child, which ended up being the Natasha Lyonne-voiced Birdie. This is probably the weirdest thing that has ever happened in the MCU, causing fans to wonder what they’re using this “anything can happen” concept for.
Over the past two seasons, fans have thrown out countless ideas that seem infinitely more interesting than half the episodes that actually aired. It’s difficult to believe that no one had Howard and Darcy having a bird baby on their bingo card.
Furthermore, there is now debate about whether the finale wiped out the Council of Kangs, either by The Exiles or some other unseen force. However, none of this is confirmed.
The idea that if this did happen, it would be the conclusion to the aborted Kang storyline that was killed off due to Jonathan Majors’ firing from the MCU after an assault conviction and a desire to move away from even the idea of a re-cast Kang, who had not proven to be the most popular villain after Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania flopped.
Lastly, the series ended with a flash of various “combo” What If…? characters that do not appear in the show at all.
