Patriots fans took to Gillette Stadium Saturday night to voice their displeasure with the team’s performance, chanting “Fire Mayo” in the midst of a 40-7 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The loss marks another disappointing chapter in what has been an abysmal season for the New England Patriots.
The chant, which echoed throughout the stadium, is a clear indication that fans have lost faith in head coach Jerod Mayo and his ability to turn the team around. It also underscores the frustration that has been building all season as the team continues to struggle on both sides of the ball.
“We’ve got to play better,” Mayo said in response to the chants after the game, via ESPN. “If we play better, we don’t have to hear that stuff.”
Despite the bleak outlook for this season, some players are standing by their coach and urging fans to give him a chance to right the ship. Defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. made it clear that he believes in Mayo’s ability to lead the team moving forward.
“I thought I should keep believing in our leader,” Wise said in an interview with ESPN. “It’s not going to be golden. We didn’t expect to win a Super Bowl this year. I get it, nobody wants to get beaten 40-7, but the chant is ridiculous.”
Linebacker Davon Godchaux also came to Mayo’s defense, suggesting that the team’s woes extend far beyond the coach’s shoulders.
“Everybody plays a part in this,” Godchaux said. “It isn’t just Jerod Mayo. Players, coaches, front office – we just have to get better as a whole organization.”
The loss drops the Patriots’ record to an abysmal 3-13, with only one win in their last eight games. If they fail to secure a victory in next week’s game, it would mark their worst season since finishing 2-14 in 1992.
It remains to be seen whether Mayo will be able to turn the tide for the franchise or if his tenure as head coach will come to an end sooner rather than later.
