Jimmy Carter’s Legacy in the Fight Against Climate Change
In recent weeks, I’ve been reflecting on the remarkable legacy of former President Jimmy Carter. His commitment to addressing climate change and promoting renewable energy sources is a vital part of his enduring impact. This column explores that connection by examining his early efforts and their relevance today.
The current Department of Energy (DOE) website highlights the critical role it plays in combating climate change. As Secretary, Carter was instrumental in establishing the DOE in 1977 through the Department of Energy Organization Act. This legislation not only created the agency but also emphasized its mission to support research and innovation aimed at reducing the impact of fossil energy technologies on people and the environment.
I was inspired by Carter’s vision when I read his article from the October edition of Forbes, titled “The Imperative of Climate Action.” His words echoed what we’re facing today: extreme weather events, sea level rise, heatwaves, droughts, and economic instability. It is imperative that we heed his warning.
