A nonprofit organization has joined forces with Elon Musk’s team in a bid to stop OpenAI from transitioning into a for-profit entity.
Encode, a network of volunteers focused on ensuring the voices of younger generations are heard in conversations about AI’s impacts, has filed an amicus brief supporting Musk’s efforts to block the transition. The move comes as tensions escalate over concerns that OpenAI’s shift to a for-profit company could compromise its commitment to prioritizing safety and the public interest.
Musk, who is an investor in Neuralink and co-founder of SpaceX, has been vocal about his opposition to OpenAI’s plans to restructure as a private corporation. In a Twitter post earlier this year, he expressed concerns that the move would allow the company to prioritize profits over its original mission to advance AI safety.
Encode’s brief notes that OpenAI’s restructuring would allow it to abandon its commitment to balancing public and commercial interests. The organization argues that such a shift would harm the public interest by prioritizing shareholder value over ensuring AI is developed in a responsible manner.
The brief also highlights the potential for a nonprofit OpenAI to continue pursuing a mission that is “value-aligned, safety-conscious” and prioritizes the public interest, whereas a for-profit company may prioritize profit over people.
