As the clock strikes midnight to welcome the new year, many Brits may be expecting a bang – but it seems that’s not on the cards.
A map revealed by weather experts has shed light on the forecast for Hogmanay celebrations across the UK. Unfortunately for revellers, fireworks have been scrapped in several areas due to stormy conditions.
The latest data suggests that the New Year will bring strong winds and heavy rain to some regions, making outdoor festivities a daunting prospect.
Scotland is expected to be hit hardest by the inclement weather, with Storm Arwen bringing gusts of up to 70mph (113km/h) in certain areas. The nation’s capital, Edinburgh, has already cancelled its planned fireworks display due to safety concerns.
Meanwhile, parts of Wales and Northern Ireland are also bracing themselves for severe weather conditions. Even London is not immune to the storms, with Big Ben’s iconic countdown to midnight closely monitored by officials.
But don’t be too disheartened! The Met Office assures that there will still be some milder temperatures in southern England, meaning a small chance of enjoying some outdoor festivities – though it remains uncertain at this point.
As we wave goodbye to 2024 and hello to 2025, many will be left wondering: How fiercely will the New Year blow in where YOU live?
