US Treasury Department Admits It Got Hacked by China
The US Treasury Department has admitted to being hacked by a group known as Salt Typhoon, which breached nine major US telecoms. The breach is considered a significant incident, highlighting the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure in the country.
According to officials, the Treasury Department did not respond promptly to the hack, which was disclosed on Friday. It was revealed that the breach had been going on for some time before it was reported.
The breach has raised serious concerns about the security practices of private companies owning and operating critical infrastructure in the US. Anne Neuberger, deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology, stated that “We wouldn’t leave our homes, our offices, unlocked and yet our critical infrastructure—the private companies owning and operating our critical infrastructure—often do not have the basic cybersecurity practices in place that would make our infrastructure riskier, costlier, and harder for countries and criminals to attack.”
The hack is believed to be linked to China, although officials did not confirm this directly. However, some experts suggest that the level of sophistication required to breach nine major US telecoms points to a nation-state actor.
The Treasury Department has promised to provide more details about the incident in its 30-day supplemental notification report. The White House and other government agencies have been notified of the breach.
It is clear that this incident highlights the urgent need for private companies to prioritize cybersecurity practices, as well as the threat posed by nation-state actors.
