US Treasury Department Admits It Got Hacked by China
In a stunning revelation, the US Treasury Department has admitted to being hacked by China’s Salt Typhoon group, marking one of the most significant cybersecurity breaches in government history.
According to officials, nine major US telecom companies were compromised by the notorious Chinese hacking group, Salt Typhoon. The breach was severe enough that Deputy National Security Adviser for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger warned that “we wouldn’t leave our homes or offices unlocked” but it seems that critical infrastructure is often left vulnerable to attacks.
The Treasury Department’s disclosure comes amid heightened tensions between the US and China, with experts warning of the devastating consequences a major cyberattack could have on global stability. The severity of this breach has sparked concerns about the potential damage caused by Salt Typhoon’s actions.
“It may be even larger than it currently appears,” said Hunter Strategy’s Williams, who expects the impact to be more significant than just accessing unclassified documents.
