Apple Cancels iPhone 14 and iPhone SE for Millions of Customers
In a sudden move, Apple has ceased the sales of its iPhone 14 and iPhone SE models in Europe. The abrupt cancellation is due to the EU’s new charging regulations, which prohibit the sale of phones with Lightning connectors that do not support USB-C charging.
As of December 27th, customers visiting Apple websites in all 27 EU countries found that only the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, iPhone 16, 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are now available for sale. This decision is a significant blow to consumers who were looking for an affordable option like the iPhone SE.
The iPhone SE was previously priced at $429, making it an attractive choice for those on a budget. However, with its discontinuation, the cheapest iPhone model now costs $699, which is a massive difference of over $170.
While some third-party resellers are still selling remaining stocks of the affected phones, Apple’s official stores have pulled the plug on these models. This means that customers in Europe will no longer be able to purchase the iPhone 14 or SE from authorized retailers like Apple.
The ban reaches beyond the EU, affecting Switzerland and Northern Ireland as well. The Republic of Ireland is also impacted, despite not having an official Apple Store within its borders.
This move may have significant repercussions for consumers, especially those who were relying on the affordable option offered by the iPhone SE. While there’s a chance that a new model might address this price gap in the future, it remains to be seen whether the company will fill the void left by the discontinuation of these phones.
In the meantime, customers are advised to explore other options or consider refurbished devices from Apple and third-party sellers.
