Google has announced a new warning panel for Chrome users to help protect them from potential security threats. The panel will alert users if any of their installed extensions are suspected of including malware, violating Chrome Web Store policies, or collecting user data without transparency.
According to Google’s security team, the warning panel is not a guarantee that your account is completely safe, but it does indicate that you don’t have any suspicious extensions installed. The panel will also provide details on the following:
* Extensions suspected of including malware
* Extensions that violate Chrome Web Store policies
* Unpublished extensions (which may indicate that an extension is no longer supported)
* Non-Web Store extensions
* Extensions that do not disclose how they handle user data
The security team recommends running a Chrome Safety Check by typing “run safety check” in the address bar and selecting “Go to Chrome safety check.” The safety check will automatically notify you of any recommendations regarding your account’s safety.
In addition, Google has emphasized the importance of reviewing extensions periodically as well as enabling the enhanced protection mode of Safe Browsing, which provides Chrome’s highest level of security.
