Philips has announced a significant upgrade to its palm recognition smart lock technology just ahead of CES 2025. The company will be showcasing the all-new 5000 Series Video Palm Recognition Smart Lock, which integrates video monitoring capabilities.
This innovative feature allows users to see who is at their door without requiring a separate smart camera. This enhanced functionality has earned Philips an honorary spot in the Innovation Awards at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025.
Philips already offers palm-recognition smart locks on the market, but the addition of video monitoring makes perfect sense. The integration should result in quicker response times and easier management via a single app. In today’s post-pandemic world, the contactless nature of palm vein recognition is also an added benefit.
The new lock can be opened using multiple methods, including palm vein recognition, PIN code, smartphone app, voice commands through Google Home or Amazon Alexa smart assistants, and even the more traditional key method.
What sets this product apart from others in the market is its ability to double as a doorbell. The Philips 5000 Series Video Palm Recognition Smart Lock is expected to be released in the second half of 2025, but pricing details have not been announced.
One notable omission from the current model is Apple HomeKit integration. Fans of the ecosystem will have to wait and see if this feature will make an appearance in the new iteration.
The lack of clarity around power requirements also remains a mystery. It’s possible that the device could be powered via Wi-Charge wireless power technology, similar to Alfred’s smart lock, which would eliminate the need for both wires and batteries.
