OpenAI Fires Back Against Musk, Claims He Wanted An OpenAI For-Profit
In a dramatic turn of events, OpenAI has fired back at Elon Musk, denying the billionaire’s allegations that it abandoned its nonprofit mission to make AI research available to all. According to OpenAI, Musk actually wanted an OpenAI for-profit from the very beginning.
The company published a series of emails on Friday that supposedly show Musk proposing the creation of a for-profit OpenAI in 2017. When his proposal was rejected by the other co-founders and investors, he allegedly walked away, only to later come back and sue OpenAI.
OpenAI’s move comes as part of its ongoing legal battle with Musk, which has been going on for months now. In July, Musk dropped his original lawsuit, only to revive it in late summer. An amended complaint was filed last month, naming new defendants including Microsoft and adding AI company xAI as a plaintiff.
At the heart of the dispute is OpenAI’s decision to transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity. Musk claims that this decision has deprived him and his AI startup, xAI, of necessary capital to further their own AI research goals.
However, in its latest salvo, OpenAI argues that it was always intended to be a for-profit organization, and that Musk’s complaints are nothing more than sour grapes.
