PUBG Creator Reveals Metaverse Gaming Plans
Brendan Greene, the creator of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), has recently made a significant announcement regarding his plans for developing a gaming-focused metaverse without the use of NFTs. This new platform, titled Artemis, is set to be released later this year and aims to create interconnected worlds that operate on the same protocol as HTTP.
According to Greene, the current breed of metaverse platforms are merely “IP bubbles that might talk to each other” in the future, echoing similar sentiments expressed by Ethereum co-founder. However, the PUBG creator seems determined to diverge from this trend and instead focus on creating a platform that is more akin to the open internet.
Artemis will be designed with moderation features to regulate user interactions, ensuring a more enjoyable experience for all participants. Greene has stated that the platform will lock out individuals who misbehave, but rather than completely blocking them, Artemis will transform these users into ghostly entities that can only observe other user activities, preventing them from participating in any further gaming or social events.
In his interview with IGN, Greene emphasized that the metaverse platform will not allow for anonymous interactions, citing concerns that anonymity “kind of breaks the social construct.” This approach may be a departure from the anonymity often found on traditional online platforms and forums, where users can maintain their privacy without disclosing their identities.
Greene’s announcement comes as other prominent entities, including Ubisoft, Lamborghini, and FIFA, are exploring the possibilities offered by Web3. In fact, Ubisoft has previously announced a free NFT mint in one of its upcoming games. Former Disney and Marvel employees have also collaborated to create a blockchain game publishing platform. Additionally, there are rumors that other companies like Lamborghini and FIFA are investigating the metaverse gaming world.
As the creator of PUBG joins the growing list of big-name developers entering this emerging space, it is yet to be determined how Artemis will differentiate itself from existing platforms created by entities such as Yuga Labs and Meta.
