Ryan Reynolds takes swipe at Justin Baldoni amid wife Blake Lively’s legal battle as he claims ‘women are held to a different standard’ during speech at awards gala
Ryan Reynolds has taken a subtle jab at Justin Baldoni, while addressing the issue of women being treated unfairly in Hollywood. The actor made the comments during a speech at an awards gala, amidst his wife Blake Lively’s ongoing legal battle.
The Deadpool star was honored with an award for his work in promoting social justice and equality. However, he used the platform to express his concerns over the unequal treatment of women in the industry.
“I think we’re all aware that women are held to a different standard,” Reynolds began his speech. “They’re expected to be perfect, they’re expected to be quiet, they’re expected to be polite. But I think we can all agree that’s just not fair.”
The star then took aim at Justin Baldoni, an actor and director known for his work on 1in4242, a documentary series about adoption.
“I want to say thank you to my wife Blake Lively, who is currently in the middle of a very public legal battle. I know she’s not here tonight, but I think it’s important that we acknowledge that she’s being held to a different standard,” Reynolds said.
The comments from Reynolds are likely in reference to Lively’s ongoing lawsuit against the Daily Mail over an article they published about her.
Reynolds’ speech also referenced his own experiences with sexism and misogyny in Hollywood, saying “it’s still the same old story every year: ‘Oh, Ryan Reynolds is a feminist! He’s a good guy!’ But I don’t know how to make it stop. All I can do is continue to try.”
The comments have sparked debate on social media, with many praising Reynolds for his support of women and his willingness to speak out about the issue.
However, some critics have accused him of being tone-deaf and insensitive, arguing that he has failed to acknowledge his own privilege as a white male in Hollywood.
