Google Folds More Teams Into DeepMind To ‘Accelerate The Research To Developer Pipeline’
As it aims to accelerate its AI development pace, Google has decided to further streamline the teams building its AI services, platforms, and tools. The tech giant announced that its AI Studio team and the team responsible for developing the API for Gemini series of models will be moving under Google DeepMind.
Google DeepMind was established in 2023 through a merger between Google’s DeepMind team and the Google Brain team from Google Research. It serves as an AI R&D division behind many of Google’s recent AI product innovations, including the Gemini series of models.
The relocation of these teams will enable the company to “double down on our already deep collaboration and accelerate the research to developer pipeline,” stated Logan Kilpatrick, who leads product for Google’s AI Studio developer platform. The mission for the team remains unchanged.
One engineer from the affected teams, Jaana Dogan, expressed optimism about the change. She believes it will make DeepMind’s work “publicly available in ways that [weren’t] possible before.” Dogan is convinced that this move will result in better APIs, more open-source solutions, and additional tools for users to name a few.
The decision follows a similar move made by Google earlier, where the team behind its Gemini-powered chatbot also moved under DeepMind. This was done to “keep increasing the pace of progress” within the company’s AI development, as stated by CEO Sundar Pichai during an all-hands meeting obtained by CNBC.
In recent months, Google has also relocated its models, research, and responsible AI teams into DeepMind in a bid to accelerate its AI innovation.
Pichai acknowledged that there is “some work to do in 2025 to close the gap and establish a leadership position” regarding the company’s Gemini chatbot. He emphasized that scaling Gemini on the consumer side would be the organization’s biggest focus for the year.
