Walmart Just Posted A Massive Nintendo Switch 2 Teaser
Nintendo fans have been anxiously awaiting any hint or confirmation regarding the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2. And today, Walmart Canada has seemingly dropped a massive teaser that may very well be an intentional leak from the gaming giant itself.
On Wednesday, October 16th, 2016, Nintendo of America famously tweeted an invitation to watch the first Switch preview trailer (back when it was still code-named âNXâ). The trailer was scheduled to go live the very next day. And now, Walmart Canada has tweeted the exact same image, with the caption “Hey, Mario đ”. The implication is clear: Nintendo will repeat history and announce some kind of Switch 2 reveal that will take place on Thursday, January 16th.
At first glance, this tweet may seem innocent enough – an enthusiastic social media manager cleverly adding their voice to the rumor mill to boost engagement. But upon further inspection, it’s clear that Walmart Canada is not just any ordinary retailer. Back in 2018, I reported on Bethesda’s hilarious response to Walmart Canada leaking the existence of Rage 2. The retailer also briefly published listings for a slew of unannounced games including Forza Horizon 5, Borderlands 3, and Gears of War 5 (the listings were quickly removed, but not before Wario64 captured a screenshot).
It’s worth noting that Walmart Canada’s leaky behavior has slowed to a trickle since then. However, large corporations like this rarely let their social media accounts operate without an approval process. This feels very much like something posted deliberately to generate hype and excitement around the upcoming release.
As someone who used to do marketing for AMD, I know firsthand that leaks are often intentionally planted. And I wouldn’t put it past Nintendo of America to be quietly orchestrating a few creative ways to draw all eyes to them this week in an effort to capitalize on the nonstop attention Switch 2 has been getting since CES.
The truth is out – we will likely know much more about the Switch 2 in less than 48 hours.
