Canadian Crypto Moderator Hides After Bitcoin Kidnap Threats
A Canadian crypto moderator has been forced to go into hiding with his family after he was targeted in a kidnap attempt allegedly linked to Bitcoin. The incident highlights the growing problem of cryptocurrency-related crimes in Canada.
According to reports, two masked men approached the moderator’s home on November 4, 2024, sparking fears for his safety and that of his children. The situation escalated further when a suspicious black car without license plates was seen near his residence shortly after the initial incident. On another occasion, the same vehicle swerved on the road to force him to stop, with one suspect allegedly pulling out a gun.
The crypto moderator defended himself by using pepper spray, but the incident has left him deeply shaken. The attackers are believed to have been motivated by false claims that he held 2.5 million BTC, when in reality his Bitcoin holdings amount to only $10,000.
Despite reporting the incidents to the authorities, the victim is skeptical about their ability to ensure his safety. As a result, he has had to relocate multiple times to avoid further threats.
The incident is just one of many examples of the rising problem of cryptocurrency-related crimes in Canada. According to Jameson Lopp, co-founder of Casa, there have been over 100 physical attacks on Bitcoin holders in recent years.
In another disturbing incident, CEO Dean Skurka of WonderFi was hijacked in Toronto and forced to pay $720,000 for his release just a few months ago. Tragically, Montreal police found the body of Kevin Mirshah i, a crypto influencer accused of promoting Marsan (MRS), a cryptocurrency that dropped by 90% in value.
The incident highlights the need for greater vigilance and cooperation between authorities, crypto users, and service providers to tackle the growing menace.
