Apple has announced it is temporarily halting the use of AI-powered notification summaries for news and entertainment apps following a series of inaccurate alerts. The decision comes just weeks after the BBC reported that an article summary generated by Apple’s AI system incorrectly stated that Luigi Mangione, the man charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself.
As part of this change, all notification summaries will now be displayed in italics to distinguish them from regular notifications. Furthermore, users will have the ability to disable these summaries for a specific app directly from their Lock Screen. Additionally, Apple will begin notifying users that the notification summary feature is still in beta and may contain errors.
The move is seen as a major setback for the tech giant’s AI-powered features, which had been touted as a way to streamline the way people consume news and entertainment. The company had previously stated that it would release an update to “further clarify” the fact that the text displayed in notification summaries is generated by Apple Intelligence. However, this change has not yet occurred.
While no official timeline has been provided for when iOS 18.3 will be available to the general public, a public beta is expected to launch next week.
