Bumble Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd Returns as CEO Amid Dating App Decline
In a surprise move, Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd has announced her return to the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in mid-March. This decision comes amidst a significant decline in the popularity and revenue of dating apps.
Wolfe Herd stepped down from her position as CEO at the beginning of 2024 but will now take over once again, effective mid-March. The current CEO, Lidiane Jones, who succeeded Wolfe Herd in January 2024, has resigned for personal reasons and will remain in the role until the transition.
“I’m energized and fully committed to Bumble’s success,” Wolfe Herd stated in a press release. “We have exciting innovations ahead for Bumble in this bold new chapter.”
Bumble gained popularity in part because of its innovative approach that allowed women to initiate conversations first, a feature that differentiated it from other dating apps like Tinder. However, the company recently introduced a redesign that allows men to send messages in response to prewritten questions, which may have contributed to its declining user base.
The redesign was announced following layoffs that aimed to “better align its operating model with future strategic priorities.” Unfortunately, Bumble’s share price has dropped by more than half since the redesign.
