Caribbean nation of St Kitts launches investigation after 19 people found dead in drifting vessel
In a shocking discovery, the eastern Caribbean nation of St. Kitts and Nevis has launched an investigation following the gruesome find of at least 19 decomposed bodies on a drifting vessel off the coast of Nevis.
According to authorities, the Coast Guard responded to a report of a drifting boat around 11:30 am on Wednesday, where they discovered the partially submerged vessel contained human remains. The body was then towed to St. Kitts for further investigation and identification.
Police Commissioner James Sutton expressed concerns over the advanced state of decomposition, making it difficult for officials to determine the exact number of bodies or identify them.
“It was a fishing vessel, which is not typically found in the Caribbean,” Sutton revealed to The Associated Press. “We are not certain, but we believe that this vessel originated off the West African coast.”
This discovery marks a rare incident in recent memory for the twin-island nation, leaving authorities scrambling to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The investigation will likely involve international cooperation and forensic expertise to identify the deceased and determine the cause of death.
