ANDREW NEIL: Will we EVER escape the malevolent shadow of Covid?
It wrecked Britain’s work ethic, added a trillion to our national debt, crippled the NHS – and scarred a generation of teenagers who are now a powder keg waiting to explode…
As I write this, it is 2023, three years after the supposedly triumphant “end” of the pandemic. And yet, the damage done by Covid-19 lingers like an open wound.
We were promised that life would return to normal, that our economy and society would bounce back as if nothing had happened. But I fear it’s too little, too late. The scars run too deep, the consequences too profound.
Let us not forget the devastating impact on our nation’s work ethic. Covid-19 has created a culture of laziness, where too many people have become reliant on government handouts and subsidies rather than hard work and personal responsibility. We can’t just pretend this away; it will take generations to fix.
And what about the debt? A staggering trillion pounds! The interest alone will be crippling our children’s future for years to come. Is that really a price worth paying for a few months of lockdowns?
But perhaps the most tragic legacy is the destruction of the NHS. I remember when healthcare was at the heart of British society, not just a bureaucratic mess of delays and shortages. How can we continue to claim our country is strong while our healthcare system teeters on the brink of collapse?
