A Moon-Threatening Asteroid Has Weird Shape, Scientists Say
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has given scientists a better understanding of asteroid 2024 YR4, including its composition and size. The research team used the Gemini South telescope in Chile to create an image of the asteroid.
The data suggests that the asteroid is unlikely to hit Earth but may impact the moon on December 22, 2032. However, it’s worth noting that if this were to happen, it wouldn’t significantly alter the moon’s orbit.
One surprising finding from the research was the discovery of YR4’s unique shape, which resembles a hockey puck. Most asteroids are shaped like potatoes or toy tops.
This unique shape could provide valuable insights for future asteroid missions and defense strategies.
In addition, researchers discovered that the asteroid is likely made of solid rock.
