Google has announced that it will support Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) for its Gemini models and Software Development Kit (SDK). This move comes just a few weeks after OpenAI also agreed to adopt the protocol.
According to a post on X by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Google will add MCP support to its products. The post does not specify a timeline for this integration.
MCP is an open standard that allows AI models to draw data from various sources such as business tools and software, content repositories, and app development environments. This enables developers to build two-way connections between data sources and AI-powered applications like chatbots. By exposing data through “MCP servers” and building “MCP clients,” developers can connect their apps and workflows with these servers on command.
Since Anthropic open-sourced MCP a few months ago, several other companies have already added support for the protocol to their platforms, including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph.
The adoption of this standard by Google and OpenAI could significantly boost the use and development of AI models in various industries.
