Wayve’s self-driving tech is headed to Nissan vehicles
In a major deal, Nissan has announced it will be integrating Wayve’s self-driving software into its advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) starting in 2027. This partnership marks a significant milestone for the UK-based startup Wayve, which has raised over $1.3 billion from investors including Nvidia, Microsoft, SoftBank Group, and Uber.
As part of this collaboration, Nissan will combine Wayve’s software with sensors, including lidar from an undisclosed supplier, into its ProPilot ADAS system. According to Nissan, the resulting technology will set a “new standard for autonomous driving with advanced collision avoidance capability.”
The self-driving tech developed by Wayve is noteworthy as it uses an end-to-end data-driven learning approach, similar to Tesla’s methodology. However, unlike Tesla, Wayve plans to sell its “Embodied AI” to automakers and other companies. This self-learning technology allows for the development of software that can operate on a wide range of platforms without relying on specific sensors or high-definition maps.
This flexibility is seen as particularly appealing to automakers, as it enables integration with existing sensors like cameras and radar. The software captures data from these sensors, which directly informs the driving decisions of the system. Additionally, Wayve’s technology can run on any GPU that an OEM partner already has in their vehicles, making it a cost-effective option.
As noted by Nissan spokesperson Shiro Nagai, Wayve’s Embodied AI foundation model, a large-scale end-to-end AI trained on vast amounts of real-world driving data, allows the software to adapt across different environments and vehicle platforms. This technology will enable future Nissan vehicles to closely replicate the judgment and actions of a careful and competent human driver in complex driving scenarios.
The partnership with Wayve marks an important step forward for Nissan’s ADAS capabilities, which will be available starting in 2027.
