Special Committee to Probe President Milei’s Role in Libra Meme Coin Scandal
On April 9, 2025, Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies approved the formation of a special congressional committee tasked with investigating the controversial Libra (LIBRA) meme coin scandal. This move comes as a result of President Javier Milei’s involvement and promotion of the project on his social media platform.
The newly formed committee will have the authority to summon top government officials, including Economy Minister Luis Caputo, Justice Minister Mariano Cúneo Libarona, and Chief of Staff Guillermo Francos. However, critics have expressed concerns regarding the exclusion of President Milei himself and his sister Karina from the inquiry, suggesting that this could undermine the investigation’s credibility.
It is alleged that Milei utilized his significant social media following to promote the LIBRA meme coin, which saw its value surge to $5 before plummeting by over 94% after he deleted the post. This sudden collapse has raised suspicions of a pump-and-dump scheme. A group of lawyers and an engineer subsequently filed a formal criminal complaint against Milei, accusing him of fraud for his role in promoting the cryptocurrency.
As a result of this scandal, there are allegations that the project was a “rug-pull” scam, with Milei accused of misleading investors by leveraging his substantial following to manipulate the market.
