Adam Levine Recalls Paul McCartney’s Reaction to ‘Maroon 5′ Beatles Cover: “We Did It Better”
In a recent interview, Maroon 5 lead vocalist Adam Levine shared an amusing anecdote about the band’s experience with a Beatles cover. During their early days as a group, the pop-rock outfit attempted to record a rendition of The Beatles’ iconic song “Don’t Let Me Down.” According to Levine, it was a chance encounter that brought them face-to-face with none other than Paul McCartney himself.
As Levine recalled, they had been invited to perform at a charity event, and it just so happened that McCartney was in attendance. After their set, the legendary Beatle approached the band to offer some feedback on their cover.
“We played this Beatles song, ‘Don’t Let Me Down,’ and I think we did it better,” Levine remembered McCartney saying with a grin. “I mean, whoa! We were all like, ‘Oh my god, he’s talking about our song!'”
Levine went on to detail the band’s early days of struggling to find their footing in the music industry. He acknowledged that they had grown up listening to The Beatles and being heavily influenced by their work.
“I think we grew up on those records,” Levine emphasized. “You know, ‘Abbey Road,’ ‘Sgt. Pepper.’ That stuff is ingrained in us.”
The experience of performing alongside McCartney at the charity event left a lasting impression on Levine, who recognized the significance of the moment. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from one of his idols and acknowledged that it was “a once-in-a-lifetime thing” that he would never forget.
Despite the initial surprise and awe, Levine didn’t hesitate in sharing that McCartney’s words had a profound impact on him as an artist. “I think we took that as a huge compliment,” he said with a smile.
