For security, Android phones will now auto-reboot after three days
Google has quietly rolled out a new security feature for Android devices, which will automatically reboot the phone if it remains locked for three consecutive days. The update was pushed to Google Play services on Monday, with the change listed under “Security & Privacy”.
The feature is designed to make life more difficult for individuals attempting to access and extract data from an unauthenticated device. This could potentially impact law enforcement agencies using forensic analysis devices to access sensitive information without the owner’s consent.
Prior to a phone being switched on and unlocked, certain data stored within remains fully encrypted and harder to access without the user’s passcode. This is known as the “Before First Unlock” state. Once unlocked, however, some data gets decrypted and can potentially be accessed by brute-forcing the passcode or exploiting security flaws.
The Android update aims to make it more challenging for unauthorized parties to access sensitive information during this time period, effectively locking down the device until the user intervenes.
It is worth noting that Apple rolled out a similar feature for iOS devices last year.
