Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is Set: Here’s What We Know So Far
As expected for months, YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul will face off against former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in his next fight, according to Mike Coppinger of The Ring Magazine. The report suggests that the bout will take place this summer, although no official date has been set yet. It is also unclear whether the event will air on Netflix once again.
Paul recently defeated legendary boxer Mike Tyson via unanimous decision in November 2024 and boasts a professional record of 11-1 with seven knockouts. Chavez Jr., 39, carries a pro record of 54-6-1 with 34 knockouts and scored a unanimous-decision win over former UFC fighter Uriah Hall in July 2024.
In his Instagram post following Paul’s fight against Tyson, Chavez Jr. issued a call-out to the Problem Child, but Paul mostly ignored him. However, it appears that Chavez Jr. is the new target after proposed fights with Canelo Alvarez and Tommy Fury failed to materialize.
I previously argued that Chavez Jr. would be an ideal opponent for Paul at this stage of his career. Despite being a celebrity boxer with no amateur background and only 12 professional fights against mostly non-boxers, Paul’s competition should gradually increase in quality. Paul’s age gap with Tyson was deemed too significant by many, but the difference in age between him and Chavez Jr. is more manageable.
I am curious to see how Paul and his team approach the hype for this fight. The build-up began on Thursday when Paul released a teaser video that candidly discussed his efforts to secure bigger fights. While there are no hints in the video suggesting that Chavez Jr. would be his next opponent, rumors of a potential bout with him emerged from other sources before Coppinger provided more information and credibility.
As far as the odds for this fight go, I believe Paul will likely be an overwhelming favorite. In my opinion, it is an insult to Chavez Jr., considering he has gone the distance with Canelo eight years ago and was a world champion 13 years ago. Despite his undeniable skills—such as his strong chin, size advantage, and body punching ability—and being the son of a legendary boxer, he never reached the heights that were expected of him.
Chavez Jr.’s dedication, discipline, and conditioning issues have always been a concern throughout his career. With this fight likely to generate massive paychecks for both fighters, especially considering how far removed Chavez Jr. is from being a top-tier fighter, it will be interesting to see who gets featured on the undercard.
