James Howells Reveals New Plan to Extract Landfill Bitcoin Drive
James Howells has revealed a new plan to extract the landfill bitcoin drive containing 8,000 coins he mined in early 2009. The Welshman’s girlfriend accidentally discarded the drive in 2013, and it is now worth an astonishing $776 million.
Howells had previously attempted to recover the drive through various means, including proposing to fund the excavation himself and offering a share of the recovered bitcoins to Newport City Council and the local community. Despite these offers, the council has consistently refused his requests, citing environmental concerns and legal constraints.
Following a legal defeat in January, it seemed that all hope was lost for Howells. A judge dismissed his claim, stating that the hard drive legally belongs to the council since it was discarded. The ruling effectively took everything from him and left him with nothing.
However, Newport City Council’s recent announcement that they plan to close part of the landfill and convert it into a solar farm within the next two years has provided Howells with an unexpected opportunity. He is now considering putting in a rival bid or agreeing to a period of time when he can search the landfill before the solar panels are installed.
According to sources, owning the site would allow him to conduct the excavation without the council’s approval, although the feasibility of this plan remains uncertain given potential environmental regulations and significant costs involved.
