Google changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Maps
Google has officially updated the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its mapping service. This decision comes after President Donald Trump decreed that the Gulf of Mexico would be renamed the Gulf of America during his inauguration.
According to the new policy, when searching for the term “Gulf of America” on Google Maps, users in the United States will only see the name changed to the Gulf of America. International users will see both names displayed, while Mexican users will still only see the term “Gulf of Mexico”.
This change is a result of Trump’s executive order, which also reverses an Obama-era decision to rename Mount McKinley to Denali, a name that has been used by indigenous peoples for centuries.
The move was met with criticism from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who expressed her discontent by stating she would be sending a letter to Google questioning their decision. However, Google’s stance on the matter is consistent with its existing policies regarding naming differences between countries.
