ZKsync Hacker Accepts Bounty and Returns Stolen Funds
In a surprising turn of events, the hacker behind the recent $5 million heist has agreed to accept a 10% bounty and return the remaining funds. The massive hack occurred when an attacker exploited a weakness in ZKsync’s airdrop smart contract.
According to reports, the protocol’s Security Council sent an on-chain message to the hacker on April 21st, offering a 10% bounty and giving them three days to return the stolen funds. And in a remarkable display of cooperation, the hacker has complied with the offer and returned the majority of the funds within the given deadline.
As stated by ZKsync, the case is now considered resolved, with the recovered funds placed under the custody of their Security Council. The platform’s community will soon vote on how to utilize these funds.
It’s noteworthy that this is not the first instance where a hacker has returned stolen funds after being offered a bounty. Last month, the 1inch attacker returned $5 million they had siphoned from the platform following a $450,000 bounty.
Meanwhile, another high-profile case involving Bybit hackers continues to unfold as they move and launder the stolen $1.5 billion despite an offer of $140 million in bounties.
The utilization of these funds remains uncertain at this time.
