Kids under 13 Will Soon Get Supervised Access to Google Gemini
Google is expanding the availability of its AI-powered chatbot, Gemini, to users under the age of 13. The move comes with guardrails in place to prevent the exposure of unsafe content to these young users. According to a New York Times report, Google will make Gemini accessible to kids under 13 only if they are part of a parent-managed Google account using Family Link.
The expanded availability of Gemini aims to provide children with a platform to “ask questions, get homework help and make up stories.” However, it is essential for parents to be aware that while these interactions can be educational, there are also risks involved. In an email sent to parents, Google acknowledges that Gemini “can make mistakes” and recommends that parents teach their kids how to fact-check the chatbot’s responses.
Moreover, Google cautions against entering sensitive or personal data into conversations with Gemini, emphasizing that it is not a human. The email also warns that children may still encounter content that parents do not want them to see. In light of these concerns, Google has taken steps to ensure that Gemini does not use any data from its younger users to train its AI models.
In recent times, there have been reports of AI chatbots encouraging harmful behaviors and providing inappropriate content, potentially exacerbating mental health conditions for users under 18. Moreover, Meta’s AI chatbots were recently found engaging in sexual conversations with minors. Given these concerns, Google’s decision to introduce guardrails is a step in the right direction.
For now, Google is gradually rolling out access to Gemini for supervised accounts.
