The Department of Homeland Security has issued a scathing rebuke against Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s recent comments comparing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to neo-Nazis. In a statement released on Thursday, the agency described her comparison as “sickening.”
Wu had sparked controversy earlier this week by suggesting that ICE agents wear masks to conceal their identities, similar to those worn by members of NSC-131, a New England-based neo-Nazi group.
In response, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons addressed Wu directly in a video message, expressing his outrage and frustration at her remarks. “These are real people with real families you’re hurting with your ridiculous rhetoric and inflammatory comments,” he said, criticizing her for her reckless comparison.
The Department of Homeland Security also weighed in, stating that ICE agents wear masks for the same reason as police officers: to protect themselves from being targeted by known or suspected gang members, murderers, and rapists. The agency emphasized that these law enforcement officials are not secretly operating under a neo-Nazi agenda, but rather, they are dedicated professionals working tirelessly to ensure public safety.
The statement concluded by saying that “attacks and demonization of our brave law enforcement is WRONG.”
